We have a lot of lifters at our gym who compete in USA Powerlifting and a few of us will be traveling to Lombard, Illinois next week for Raw Nationals which begins on Wednesday, October 16.
It will be largest meet in the history of USA Powerlifting, with over 1350 registered lifters.
Jay and I like to make sure our lifters are more than prepared for their meets, so this is something I want to share with anyone who is headed to Raw Nationals, and any powerlifting meet for that matter.
The National Office has sent 7 emails to the lifters as of October 8, 2019. I recommend that you either save them to your phone as PDFs, or print them and bring them with you. I also recommend getting to the venue the day before you compete to check-in and take advantage of the time in which early gear check is available. Saving time (and potential stress) the day of your lifting is great – so check in early if your schedules allows it. Plus, with the new apparel policies that have been implemented recently, it would be best to learn that everything you have is up to spec early, so you can remedy any potential problems.
You must present EVERYTHING that you will be wearing on the platform. Bring your USAPL Membership and photo ID with you too, to show them that you are who you say you are! T-shirts need to be crew neck, have no pockets, and the sleeves must cover the deltoids. No profanity is allowed on any of the gear you will wear on the platform. Gentlemen, the rule changed this year regarding underwear – you can now wear boxers/boxer briefs (not just a jockstrap or tighty whities), but the legs of the underwear cannot be longer than the legs of your singlet and they cannot be “compression” shorts. All gear worn at Nationals must be on the IPF Approved list. There are no exceptions! Here is a link to the IPF Approved list: https://tinyurl.com/y6zx6nrl
Be early. Seriously. This is a National Meet, so weigh-ins are always in Lot Number order. There is a strict time limit of 90 minutes from the start of weigh-in until it is closed. If you missed that window, you are not eligible to lift because that would be unfair to the other competitors. Your Lot Number can be found in Email Number 6 from the National Office – click on the hyperlink for the public Roster on that email, or click here: https://tinyurl.com/yya2mfpq
In addition to being a way to organize lifters for weigh-in, Lot Numbers are also used for lifting order. If 2 (or more) lifters in the same flight request the same weight on an attempt, the lifter with the lower Lot Number lifts first!
This should go without saying, but please be courteous and kind to your fellow lifters and the people who are helping to run the meet. Clean up behind yourself so that the work of the volunteers isn’t compounded by cleaning up trash that others have left behind at the end of the day. A “thank you” and a hand shake also go a long way at the end of a meet.
Good luck and White Lights to everyone at next week’s Raw National Championships!
