I’m proud to say that two of our Kansas City Barbell gym members stepped on the platform this past weekend for the Kansas State and Open Championships, hosted at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas.
Weigh-ins were scheduled for 11:00. They both made weight with no issues. Mia came in at 87kg and Meredith at 64kg. Five minutes after 12:00 the athletes started their warmups in the warmup room. Lifting started at 1:00.
Meredith was first on the platform. She opened with an easy 37kg snatch. Her first attempt was deemed good by the judges with 2 white lights. For her second attempt, she went up to 40kg. Due to a technical error, she missed the lift with three reds. For her third snatch attempt, she jumped up to 45kg and violently performed a power snatch. The lift was good, earning two white lights!
Mia was next. She chalked her hands and patiently walked up to the bar. Mia opened with a violently easy 65kg. The lift was good, earning 3 white lights. Her next attempt was 68kg. It appeared to go up easier than her opener! 3 whites, it was good. For her third, she took 71kg for a ride. It looked easy. 3 whites!
Next up was clean and jerk.
Meredeth successfully opened with a 55kg power clean and an easy jerk. 3 whites. Next came a 60kg attempt with a miss in the jerk. 3 red lights and the lift was deemed bad. For her third attempt, she hit 60kg again and successfully completed the lift with a dominant jerk! The lift earned two white lights.
Mia opened with 77kg. The lift earned two whites. After this first attempt, Mia said “That was way too easy.” Her second attempt was a very powerful 82kg. Good lift. 3 Whites. For her third and final attempt, she went to 89kg. The clean was good! She managed to stand up with the squat. As a rule of thumb, if Mia can clean it, she can jerk it. She completed the lift earning 3 whites.
When lifting was complete we waited for awards to be given out. All of our ears perked up when we heard Merediths’s name. She had earned a 3rd place win with a 105kg total! Next up came Mia! Mia earned 2nd place with a 160kg total!
Looking back there are a few details that stand out about this day. First is how well Meredith performed for her first weightlifting competition. She kept her cool and never stressed. Meredith had fun, which is how it should be. This was Mia’s first meet since moving from Georgia. She performed exceptionally well going 6/6 while maintaining a calm cool that few competitors possess.
Another thing that stood out during this meet is how well it was run. Coach Anna Martin of KC Weightlifting provided the equipment used. Anna along with Co-Director Whitney Rodden ran a wonderfully smooth meet. There was zero wasted time. You could tell how much the lifters appreciated being able to get down to the business of lifting rather than waiting on an inefficient meet director.
All in all, it was a wonderful day. The KCBB Family is eager and ready for the next opportunity to step on the platform.
