With warmer weather on the horizon and people planning their summer trips, it is easy to get off track with your diet. Depending on your goals, you have different routes to take.
Eating out at the airport or while on a road trip can be tough. I like to pack beef jerky, protein bars, dried fruit, and nuts. Also, prepping food and bringing a cooler is another option. Make sure your ice pack or water bottle is frozen solid to get through TSA, or that the liquid is less than 3 oz.
If you are getting ready for a show or meet, you do not want to get too far off track or off track at all. If you are just going away for a weekend, you could prep your food for the weekend and load up the cooler. Then you would just need a fridge and microwave in your room. If you are going to be gone longer, that might not be the best option. I would recommend getting a room with a kitchenette or renting from an owner, so you have access to a kitchen. You also have the option of doing a meal service and having the food shipped to where you are going.
If you are just trying to be healthy, you do not have to be as stringent. Let’s say you plan to consume three meals a day, and will be eating out for most of them. It will take a little planning and looking ahead at where you will eat. An easy breakfast would be going to Starbucks, they are everywhere, and ordering a coffee and getting two reduced fat turkey bacon sandwiches. Take the English muffin off one and combine egg and bacon with the other sandwich for 10g of fat, 28g of carbs, and 34g of protein. For lunch, a salad with dressing on the side and a baked, grilled, or steamed protein. When you head out to dinner, look at the menu beforehand and have a plan going in. Most restaurants are accommodating. You can order your protein seasoned and ask for it baked or grilled. Get vegetables on the side and asked to have them steamed without any sauce. Get a side of rice or roasted potatoes. Just know most restaurants use butter for cooking to add that extra flavor. Enjoy a dessert one night, but no need to eat them every night. And beware of the empty calories in your alcohol.
The last and easiest option is to just go and enjoy yourself on vacation. When you return, get back on track and do not feel guilty about enjoying yourself.
